Opengear’s KCS6000 IP Enables Legacy KVM Devices

August 13th, 2008

Consolidating communications and IT infrastructure management at the rack

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (LINUXWORLD Booth #425) - August 4, 2008 - Opengear a leading provider of next generation out-of-band management solutions, today announced the release of its KCS6000 KVM gateway console server. The KCS enables administrators to use their existing KVM and LCD console equipment to control all the equipment in the racks - serial, USB, network devices, as well as legacy KVM computers.

“Currently there is an investment of more than $3 billion in KVM infrastructure devices at datacenters and enterprise computer rooms worldwide,” said Bob Waldie, CEO of Opengear. “In a market where space is king and more companies are moving to blade servers and virtual machines, useless devices are anything but welcome. With the new KCS6000, companies do not have to spend money replacing old units, instead they can extend the life of their investment.”

The KCS6000 thin client enables administrators to locally manage computers at the system level (BIOS, service processor, IPMI); operating level (VMWare, Windows, Linux, Solaris); right up to the applications layers (RDP, VNC, browser and ICA/Citrix clients). The KCS gives an administrator the ability to control headless infrastructure using the USB control ports, serial consoles, management network ports and rich embedded management clients.

The KCS6000 empowers users’ existing KVM equipment to now run a Firefox browser with Java applets in an embedded SUN JRE, to locally connect to VMWare servers, Cisco routers or IBM-RSA/ Dell-DRAC/ HP-iLO/SUN-ALOM service processors. Embedded with Network UPS Tools to manage power using the USB or serial control ports on the power supplies, the KCS6000 is also an embedded terminal emulator, connecting existing KVM gear to legacy serial console devices.

Local operations can also be monitored remotely and securely using AAA secure with local logging and alert capabilities.

Frost & Sullivan Commends Sarian Systems’ Product Innovation in High Speed Wireless Enterprise Routers

August 7th, 2008

The 2008 Frost & Sullivan European High Speed Wireless Enterprise Routers Product Innovation of the Year Award is presented to UK-based Sarian Systems, A Digi International Inc. Company, in recognition of its HR series routers. The addition of High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) capability to Sarian’s enterprise HR routers is a novel approach that offers high speed uplink data transfer rates on par with fixed-line broadband. This allows companies to transfer larger volumes of data at speeds far superior to previously employed mobile networks.

HR routers are enterprise class routers developed by Sarian Systems to provide ‘super 3G’ high speed mobile access by employing advanced technologies such as HSUPA and HSDPA. The HR4110 router and HR4420 multi-router are both compatible with mobile technologies such as GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA.

“This allows enterprises to run bandwidth hungry applications and services over mobile connections in a cost-effective fashion, while also enabling a smooth migration path from GPRS, EDGE, and UMTS/3G networks to HSUPA and HSDPA,” notes Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Venkat Malleypulla. “Since their launch, HR routers have been widely used in various sectors such as surveillance, media streaming, and remote digital signage.”

Adding HSUPA to the products has aided diverse application sectors, including surveillance, which requires captured images to be transmitted in real time.  The HSUPA capabilities of the HR router enable it to provide an uplink of up to 2 Mbps, thereby facilitating high quality live streaming CCTV coverage.

“This ability will assist organisations in enhancing their security surveillance even in the most remote locations which would not be possible with traditional wired networks,” remarks Malleypulla. “Furthermore, the HSUPA capability could be used to carry out VoIP and video-conferencing for companies and the router can be extended to provide high-speed data communications for over 100 users, unlike the earlier HSDPA router which provides the same service for only a limited number of users.”

Since this device is suitable for both high speed downloads and uploads, it provides an excellent opportunity for companies to stay online and on par with fixed-line networks.  Since this router offers the same reliability as wired routers or an ADSL connection, it could also act as a reliable network back up in the event of a fixed-line network crisis.

“Sarian Systems has designed its HR routers that feature dual SIM cards slots to allow customers to pick the secondary wireless network of their choice,” states Malleypulla. “During a primary network crisis, it would provide reliability in mission critical applications as it offers access to secondary wireless networks in a cost-effective manner.”

The company is currently working with Fujitsu to supply similar wireless back-up technology integrated with wired broadband ADSL for a major national infrastructure project - estimated to be worth about $10 million - in the United Kingdom. Notably, the worth of this deal is equivalent to Sarian System’s turnover last year. The company also has strong ties with Motorola and  Novatel in the U.S. and Option N.V in Belgium with regard to the development of wireless technologies.

The Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Innovation is presented each year to the company that has demonstrated excellence in new products and technologies within its industry. The recipient company has shown innovation by launching a broad line of emerging products and technologies.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognise companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development.  Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.

Patton Unveils World’s First IP Camera Extender

January 29th, 2008

The Model 1173 simplifies IP Camera deployment and lowers installation costs by extending streaming video up to 6000 feet/1830 meters over existing copper infrastructure.

GAITHERSBURG, MD: Patton Electronics—the leader in business and carrier-class network access, connectivity, and Voice-over-IP equipment—unveils the world’s first IP Camera Extender, the Patton Model 1173, at IIPSEC 2008 in Coventry, UK this week.

Compatible with any IP camera on the market, Patton’s latest network-extension innovation is optimized to deliver high-quality streaming video over ordinary copper telephone wire at up to 50 Mbps. For video-over-Ethernet applications, Patton’s Model 1173 reduces infrastructure costs and simplifies installation by eliminating new CAT5 or coaxial cable requirements.

“The market trend is everything over Ethernet,” said Johnnie Grant, Product Manager, “yet customers want secure, rugged, and reliable IP camera installations that aren’t limited by Ethernet’s shortcomings. Patton technology takes video-over-Ethernet faster and farther–up to 6000 feet–over existing voice-grade copper. The 1173 addresses an amazing breadth of applications. Plus it eliminates the site-survey and interference issues of wireless.”

Enclosed in ruggedized metal and operating at temperatures of -10° to 70°C, the Model 1173 enables video deployment without infrastructure upgrades in such diverse scenarios as retail outlets, banks, power plants, railways, marine vessels and agricultural operations. Optional conformal coating offers additional protection from condensing humidity.

“There are lots of places where installing CAT5 or coax isn’t an option,” Mr. Grant continues. “The Model 1173 makes IP-video a possibility anywhere there’s a twisted pair. Just find an alarm circuit or a phone cable and drop it in. Problem solved.”

In older physical plants (factories, barns, oil rigs) where video surveillance is required, the IP Camera extender prolongs the life of aging twisted-pair infrastructure almost indefinitely. In locations with installed CAT5, the 1173 enhances the CAT5 network by extending video far beyond the 328 foot limit.

The 1173 extends IP video up to 6000 feet/1830 meters (15 times the Ethernet distance limitation) at 4 Mbps and up to 2000 feet/610 meters at 50 Mbps. The wall and DIN-rail mountable 1173 is fully transparent to WMV, MPEG-4, and MJPEG compression schemes.
