When networks are located outside of climate-controlled environments, networking equipment needs to be hardened to protect against environmental challenges including wide temperature swings, dust, dirt, and moisture. Hardened network equipment is designed to survive cold and hot temperatures – ranging from -40°F to 167°F (-40°C to +75°C). Hardened systems can also be sealed against the dirt, dust, and moisture with an enclosure that is rated on the ingress protection (IP) scale. Additional hardening may be required for certain applications, such as certification to IEC 61850 standards which is often a requirement for power substation automation applications.
Hardened Ethernet switches provide Layer 2 or Layer 3 networking for Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet networks. Also, in electrically noisy environments, like factory floors, the use of fiber optic cables for backbone connections is important as fiber is immune to electrical interference. Switches with SFP ports provide the ultimate flexibility by supporting a wide range of fiber cables and connectors. Network administrators can choose from managed or unmanaged network switches depending on the size and mission critical nature of the network.
