Entrix Can Supply Fixed IP SIMs.
Entrix can supply you with Fixed IP SIMs for use in the routers or gateways. These are on 24 month contracts and are payable by monthly direct debit. Please contact us on 01223 750277 to ask for details and for a contract. The datasheet link below contains our current tariff for fixed IP SIMs with various carriers (4G and 3G) and they all include fixed IP. You will have access to an online system to monitor usage.
Do you need a Fixed IP SIM?
Many of our customers need fixed IP SIMs for use with cellular routers and gateways for applications such as CCTV, Telemetry, VPN, etc.
Typically you will need a fixed IP if
Why can't I use dynamic DNS?
We are often asked why you can't just use a Dynamic DNS service to record the current IP address of the router each time it changes and look the device up by a host name. This won't work with a typical SIM from a main provider because the address allocated to the SIM is private on the provider's network. The connection works fine when the traffic is initiated from the router because the provider knows how to route the traffic back. However, if you try to connect to the IP address that you looked up on the router, you will find that it won't connect because the network doesn't know where to route the connection to.
You can use dynamic DNS if your provider gives you a dynamic public IP address. The only network provider that does this that we are aware of is 3, if you use the APN (Access Point Name) "3internet". We cannot guarantee that this will work long term.
SIM Sizes and Phone SIMs
Please note that all our routers require a standard-sized (15x25mm) SIM. This is sometimes called a mini-SIM. Do not break the nano or micro SIM out from the SIM as this can cause contact problems or jamming in the device's SIM slots when re-assembled and used.
SIMs from phones will often not work in routers as the tariff that they are assigned to is not suitable for use in these devices.
If you are not purchasing your SIM through Entrix, ensure that you purchase a standard-sized data SIM from your provider and ask them to give you the APN, username and password that you will need. Be sure to tell the provider that you are going to use the SIM in a router, not a phone.
